NASA Orbit Pavilion Opens For Free Visits At The Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum

NASA’s Orbit Pavilion, an interactive satellite sound experience, is open for free public visitation from July 24­–August 25 at the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum, located at Pier 86 (46^th Street and 12^th Avenue) in Manhattan.

NASA uses a fleet of satellites to observe Earth—its weather patterns, atmosphere, sea levels and ocean currents, winds and storm warnings and freshwater resources. Scientists and artists at NASA, inspired by the ocean-like sounds heard in a seashell, designed and built the Orbit Pavilion to draw attention to NASA’s Earth-observing missions.

This massive, interactive art installation features a captivating soundscape to represent the 19 Earth Science satellites that monitor our planet’s ever-changing pulse from their unique vantage points. Visitors can step inside the Orbit Pavilion, imagine a silver seashell fallen from space, and listen to the satellites. Each satellite has been given its own tone. The soundscape changes as the satellites move, enabling us to hear them in real time as their orbits bring them into range hundreds of miles above our heads.

NASA’s Orbit Pavilion is on view at the Intrepid Museum’s Pier 86 this summer, from July 24–August 25, 2015, including during Space & Science Festival. All activities on Pier 86 are free and open to the public.
