NARRAGANSETT 1937 takes place against the historic closing of Narragansett RaceTrack (home of Sea Biscuit) in 1937. In that year, Governor Robert E. Quinn of Rhode Island ordered the National Guard to Pawtucket due to the alleged racketeering of Walter E. O’Hara, the managing director of Narragansett Park.

Against such a charged and volatile background, the play traces the relationships of a corrupt jockey, Johnny Link (Alan B. Smith) his friends and the loves and quarrels of a Pawtucket family as they struggle to maintain order amidst the chaotic events that surround them.

Director is April James, producer of The Viking Theater Company. Now completing its eighth season, our mission is to present thought-provoking original and classical plays and short films. Most recently, the classic Awake and Sing! by Clifford Odets at the historic Actors’ Temple Theatre and Another Shade of Black, a film noir short by Jacob Ruby, screened at NewFilmmakers and The Anthology Film Archives and New York International Film Festival in LA

The distinguished cast  of Narragansett 1937 includes: Matt DeCoster (One Life to Live, ABC-TV), Erin Etheridge (Ophelia, Ophelia Theatre GroupNYC ), Irene Hourigan ( Actors Studio, Bessie, Odets’ Awake and Sing!) Bryan McGowan (Award winning radio announcer), Stephen Rembe ( The Last Gamble with Steven Bauer, Nick Mancuso, Sally Kirkland),  Francie Scanlon( proud member of SAG-AFTRA, TV/Cable legal commentator on Human Rights, International Law and former United Nations Observer for the National Association of Women Lawyers), Stewart Schneck (The Taming of the Shrew, A Midsummer’s Night Dream Shakespeare Theater of NJ),  Alan B. Smith (Bellini in Bellini &The Sultan, 2013 NYC Fringe Festival) and Shelley Valfer (member of the Regroup Theatre Company and puppeteer with The Puppeteer’s Cooperative)

Founded in 1872, by Johnathan Scott Hartley as a sketch class, the Salmagundi Club is one of the oldest art organizations in the United States.
