MOCAFAMILY: Qing Ming Family Festival

During this special event, families will have the chance to learn about the history of the Qing Ming Festival, play traditional Chinese games, and celebrate the arrival of spring by making their own kites and planting seeds!
Tickets: $10 per person. Free for MOCA Family Level Members and above, children under 2, and Cool Culture families. Stroller parking limited.

It’s a Field Day

Join a MOCA educator in playing classic Chinese games that are simply perfect for spring! Try your hand at Chinese jump rope, kick around a feather birdie, and more.
The Adventure of the Stone Monkey King
12:30-1:15pm
A traditional Chinese shadow puppetry performance by Hua Hua Visual Expressions tells the tale of an energetic monkey who become a king, learns patience, and rescues his friends from the Demon King. Even the rowdiest monkey can save the day with a bit of concentration! Stick around to see your own puppetry skills in action.
Go Fly A Kite!
1:30-2:15pm & 2:30-3:15pm
Flying kites is one of Qing Ming’s most adored activities. During this workshop, participants will be invited to make and embellish their own fully-functional, animal-themed kites. Be sure to test them out at nearby Columbus Park. The sky is the limit!
DROP-IN ARTS & CRAFTS
Folk Art in Clay
12-4pm
Qing Ming is a day for remembering the past. Families go to the grave sites of their ancestors and honor them by hosting elaborate picnics. Mold clay people, tea eggs, drum sticks, oranges, almond cookies, and more to create your very own Qing Ming picnic scene.
Plant Me an Herb Garden
12-4pm
Qing Ming also celebrates the arrival of spring. All around us, trees turn green, flowers bloom, and farmers plant new crops. Help mark the beginning of this special time by planting seeds that you can watch grow at home.

Why do people eat cold foods on Qing Ming? Discover this and more with MOCA educators during a short, interactive storytelling session of “The Tale of Jie Zitui.”
