Math Encounters: Encountering Dali in the Fourth Dimension at the Museum of Mathematics

Prominent Spanish painter Salvador Dalí was fascinated by mathematics and integrated his inspirations into his paintings; Dali’s 1954 painting “Corpus Hypercubicus” features an unfolded four-dimensional hypercube. Join mathematician Tom Banchoff as he describes his yearly encounters with Dali in NYC dating back to 1975, and discusses the artist’s use of polyhedral models, computer animations of surfaces, stereoscopic oil paintings, distorted perspective, and catastrophe theory.

Tom will be introduced by Tony Robbin, Soho artist and author of “Fourfield: Computers, Art, & the 4th Dimension” and “Shadows of Reality.”

Presentations will be held at 4 p.m. and 6:30 p.m.
