Nineteenth-Century Spiritualism and Stage MagicIn the 1850s, New York City was absolutely agog for the three young Fox sisters who claimed they communicated with the spirit world. Later proven to be a hoax, the phenomenon sparked the popular and enduring Spiritualism religious movement. This trolley tour will explore the legacies of Spiritualists and stage magicians, two groups that often came into conflict with one another. Visit the gravesites of many bizarre and fascinating practitioners (including one of the Fox sisters) of these two nineteenth-century phenomena.
