La Escuelita To Hold 15th Annual Book Fair
December 5 – 6, 2018
Celebrate the bilingual community and a rich cultural heritage with hundreds of the latest and best Spanish language children’s books.
NEW YORK (October 15, 2018) – La Escuelita, Manhattan’s oldest dual-language Spanish-English preschool, will be holding its annual La Escuelita Book Fair/Feria del Libro on Wednesday, December 5th, and Thursday, December 6th, from 8:30 am – 4:30 pm.
La Escuelita first held the popular book fair, which is open to the public, in 2003. Now in its 15th year, the fair continues with its mission of providing families with affordable, high-quality Spanish language children’s books. At the two-day event, children, parents and educators will have the opportunity to discover new stories and share treasured favorites in an atmosphere that fosters the school’s connection with the wider bilingual community. The vast majority of books—which have been selected by La Escuelita’s early childhood educators—will be priced under $10, and most are not available from traditional booksellers. The books featured are designed for infants through Grade 6. Bank Street Bookstore and Chau, Luna will also be selecting and consigning special inventory.
The fair will feature a free story-time area, where children, teachers and parents can read their favorite Spanish-language books together. Refreshments and baked goods will also be available. All funds raised will benefit La Escuelita’s Staff Development. Fund, which allows La Escuelita teachers to continue their education and thereby enhance New York’s dual-language learning community.
“La Escuelita Book Fair/Feria Del Libro is one of our favorite events at the school, because it brings the local Spanish dual-language community together for a great cause: bi-literacy!” notes Kelley Grant, Executive Director of La Escuelita. “Parents whose children attend Spanish dual-language programs in the city, teachers in Spanish dual-language programs, parents who homeschool, teachers in foreign language departments, parents and grandparents who want to ensure that the next generation maintains their connection to the Spanish language and their home countries’ cultures—everyone is united in their appreciation of quality books in Spanish.” Educational Director Emily Marmolejos adds, “For me, there’s just no substitute for the smell, crispness and warmth of reading a book. Our book fair encourages children to explore, wonder and connect through the magic of high-quality Spanish language books.”
The fair is being held at La Escuelita, located at 225 W. 99th Street (between Broadway and Amsterdam).
