Announces 2018 Kids Week

Sunday, February 18‒Saturday, February 24

Over 50 Partners Participating in Themed Week of Fun, Educational Programming During NYC Public School Winter Break

The Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum will host its annual Kids Week festival from Sunday, February 18 to Saturday, February 24.  During Kids Week, visitors will have the opportunity to participate in dozens of fun-filled activities, demonstrations and hands-on workshops, meet special guests, and watch live performances, that the whole family will enjoy.

This year, Kids Week will showcase that Science is Everywhere!  Through themed performances and hands-on activities, kids can learn about the science behind their favorite sports and games, art, theater and music, nature, animals and even outer space!

All Kids Week programming is free with Museum admission. See below for the full schedule of activities.

2018 KIDS WEEK PROGRAMMING SCHEDULE

All week, Intrepid Museum staff will lead live demonstrations, planetarium presentations and themed Tour Guide Talks. A lineup of scientists will be available for demos and one-on-one interactions with kids to talk about their work and what inspired them to pursue their careers.

From Tuesday through Friday, Shared Studios will be on site to activate a Portal in Hangar 1, enabling live interactions with a variety of fascinating explorers, exoplanet researchers, NASA engineers and others. Portals are gold spaces equipped with immersive audiovisual technology. When you enter one, you come face-to-face with individuals in parallel gold spaces around the world, and can converse in real-time, full-body, as if in the same room.  Our Portal will connect to others including one in Australia and another behind the scenes at NASA.

Sunday, February 18 and Monday, February 19:  The Science of Sports and Games

Kids can hone their fastball skills while learning about the physics of a pitch with the Staten Island Yankees, improve their golf swing with pros from the Golf Club at Chelsea Piers, throw the perfect spiral with the New York Jets, and develop movement skills through fitness activities with the New York Road Runners. Visitors can create a sports activity book featuring their favorite teams with In the Sports Zone, dive into the history of baseball with the Brooklyn Cyclones (Sunday only), and try virtual reality skiing with YokeyPokey Virtual Reality Club. Yogi Berra Museum and Learning Center will be on hand to talk Baseball Stats 101, using math and probability games and real baseball cards to calculate the best players of all time. Kids can also compete with their friends to throw the fastest pitch, while using radar technology to measure speeds and learn about the science of a fastball.

Stop by the LEGOLAND® Discovery Center to learn from a Master Model Builder and complete building challenges, experience vintage games and toys with the Museum of Interesting Things, and enjoy hands-on activities from Kidville, Dazzling Discoveries, Coca-Cola, Kerbal Space Academy and the NFL Experience. NASA’s Kevin Hussey will showcase our home planet and the universe beyond using NASA’s Eyes technology, and Mad Science will dazzle audiences with interactive presentations.

Tuesday, February 20: The Science of Arts and Music

Tuesday’s events feature an exciting lineup of Broadway performances by the casts of Once on This Island, SpongeBob SquarePants the Musical, Anastasia and School of Rock. Kids can meet a ballerina from the American Ballet Theatre, play fun-filled theater games led by Teaching Artists from The New Victory Theater, sing and dance with Be A Broadway Star, and let their creativity flow with drawing workshops from The Giggling Pig Art Studio.  Wonderspark Puppets will offer puppet-making workshops, and kids can get hands-on with creative activities from Kidville, Puppetry Arts, YokeyPokey Virtual Reality Club, STEAM Kids Lab, Symphony Space, Cornell University 4-H Youth Development, Dazzling Discoveries and NASA’s Kevin Hussey.

Families can also enjoy live performances by Gazillion Bubble Show, The Very Hungry Caterpillar Show, and Sonia De Los Santos, named one of Billboard’s top “Latin children’s music artists you should know,” who will perform in English and Spanish.

Wednesday, February 21: The Science of Arts and Music

Showstopping performances will take place throughout the day by The Very Hungry Caterpillar Show; Story Pirates Greatest Hits Show, an interactive sketch comedy musical; Tuffy Tiger: Live and In Orange!, a musical puppet show; and Kidville Rockin’ Railroad, a live music adventure.  Kids can sing and dance with Be A Broadway Star, create their own comic books with Story Pirates, and let their creativity flow with drawing workshops from The Giggling Pig Art Studio.  Wonderspark Puppets will offer puppet-making workshops, and visitors can get hands-on with creative activities from Kidville, Puppetry Arts, Brooklyn Fiber Art, YokeyPokey Virtual Reality Club, Cornell University 4-H Youth Development and Dazzling Discoveries. NASA’s Kevin Hussey will showcase our home planet and the universe beyond using NASA’s Eyes technology, and NOAA’s Joe Cione will demonstrate how drones are used to track hurricanes.

Thursday, February 22: Science and the Natural World

Kids can waddle into the world of penguin biology and meet a real-life penguin with Jenkinson’s Aquarium, and investigate amazing marine creatures with Wildlife Conservation Society: NY Aquarium. Enjoy exciting live animal demonstrations by zoologist Jarod Miller, featuring a kangaroo, a bird of prey, and more! FIRST will offer up-close robotics demonstrations, Stamford Museum & Nature Center will explore the skeletons of vertebrate animals, and Kidville will host a Mess Lab Station where kids can create their own slime and make a model volcano erupt. Budding engineers can compete to create a complex machine using ordinary items with the Rube Goldberg Speed Building Challenge, and NOAA’s Joe Cione will demonstrate how drones are used to track hurricanes. Throughout the day, explore hands-on activities, displays and presentations from Dazzling Discoveries, Kuiper Kat’s Astronomy, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, YokeyPokey Virtual Reality Club, Madame Tussauds NY, Lamont Doherty Earth Observatory, Space Racers, CUNY Medgar Evers College, U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary and Kerbal Space Academy.

NASA spacewalk flight controller and lead trainer Allison Bollinger will be on hand with real spacesuit parts and spacewalking tools, and will offer workshops on how to build a space station. Space Telescope Science Institute astronomer Jason Kalirai will talk about the hunt for Earth-like planets and share a glimpse at our next bold adventure with the James Webb Space Telescope.

Friday, February 23: Science and the Natural World 

Exciting live animal demonstrations by zoologist Jarod Miller, featuring a kangaroo, a bird of prey, and more! Performances by the Central Park Zoo’s Wildlife Theater Group will explore conservation and the special relationship between plants and animals, and SciTech Kids will demonstrate how to use fruits and vegetables to conduct electricity and make music. FIRST will offer up-close robotics demonstrations, Robofun will explore circuitry and electricity, and Kidville will host a Mess Lab Station where kids can create their own slime and make a model volcano erupt. Budding engineers can compete to create a complex machine using ordinary items with the Rube Goldberg Speed Building Challenge, and author Ed Steckley will give readings and signings of his book, Rube Goldberg’s Simple Normal Humdrum School Day. Throughout the day, explore hands-on activities, displays and presentations from Dazzling Discoveries, Columbia Space Initiative, Kuiper Kat’s Astronomy, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary, YokeyPokey Virtual Reality Club, Jupiter Joe’s Sidewalk Astronomy, Kerbal Space Academy and Madame Tussauds NY.

Saturday, February 24:  Science and the Natural World 

The final day of Kids Week offers live shows featuring unique and exotic animals from Two By Two Zoo, and tips on how to save animals around the world and in your backyard with Beardsley Zoo. NASA spacewalk flight controller and lead trainer Allison Bollinger will be on hand with real spacesuit parts and spacewalking tools. Kids can investigate amazing marine creatures with Wildlife Conservation Society: NY Aquarium. SciTech Kids will demonstrate how to use fruits and vegetables to conduct electricity and make music. FIRST will offer up-close robotics demonstrations, Brooklyn Robot Foundry will showcase their flying robots, and Kidville will host a Mess Lab Station where kids can create their own slime and make a model volcano erupt. Budding engineers can compete to create a complex machine using ordinary items with the Rube Goldberg Speed Building Challenge, and NOAA’s Joe Cione will demonstrate how drones are used to track hurricanes. Throughout the day, explore hands-on activities, displays and presentations from Dazzling Discoveries, CUNY Medgar Evers College, The Climate Museum, Stamford Museum & Nature Center, Kuiper Kat’s Astronomy, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary, YokeyPokey Virtual Reality Club, Jupiter Joe’s Sidewalk Astronomy, Kerbal Space Academy and Society of Women Engineers.

2:30pm: NASA astronaut Peggy Whitson, who has spent more time in space than any other NASA astronaut and any female astronaut worldwide, will take the stage to discuss life on board the International Space Station and the future of long-term space travel as humankind ventures to Mars and beyond.
