At 11:30 AM, Sunday, September 17, America’s go-to guy for foraging, “Wildman” Steve Brill, will lead a 3-hour walking tour of Belmont Lake State Park in North Babylon, NY, beginnng at the benches between the parking lot and concession stand building.
With woodland trails, a lake, and recreation areas, this is a great place for wild foods on the last days of summer. Now begins the peak of the season for root vegetables, and the wild species are much more flavorful and nutritious than the ones you buy. Burdock root, which tastes like a combination of potato and artichoke, stays in season from spring to fall, and it grows everywhere. Surprisingly huge quantities of wild carrots grow in the grassy dividers of the parking lot, where the sandy soil and full sunlight give them an advantage over other plants. They’re more flavorful than store-bought carrots, with a superior texture that keeps them firm in soups and stews, as well as carrot bread, cookies, and cake.
The 3-hour foraging tour of Belmont Lake State Park begins at 11:30 AM, Sunday, September 17, at the benches between the concession stand and the main parking lot, off exit 38 of The Southern State Parkway, in North Babylon, NY.
