Haydn: The Father of the String Quartet

A Free Concert Featuring Violinists Jessica Park and Alana Youssefian, Violist Stephen Goist and Cellist Shirley Hunt

New York, New York — Bloomingdale School of Music (BSM) is pleased to present violin faculty member Jessica Park in an evening of Joseph Haydn string quartets performed on period instruments on Friday, February 2nd at 7:00pm.  Joining Ms. Park will be violinist Alana Youssefian, violist Stephen Goist and cellist Shirley Hunt. The selected works to be performed demonstrate the way in which Haydn experimented with new compositional techniques that stretched the bounds of the string quartet genre. Join us and experience the genius of one of music’s great creators and innovators. This free concert will be held at the David Greer Recital Hall at BSM which is located at 323 West 108th Street. Seating is limited.

ABOUT THE ARTISTS

Jessica Park, Violin, BSM Faculty Member

Praised as an “exceptional talent” by the Frankfurter Neue Presse, violinist Jessica Park explores a wide spectrum of music on historical and modern violins. Miss Park currently plays with the Handel and Haydn Society, Boston Baroque,The American Classical Orchestra, Trinity Baroque Orchestra, and other period-instrument ensembles in the northeastern United States.

Guest Artists

Alana Youssefian, Violin

Baroque violinist Alana Youssefian has quickly forged a reputation as an engaging and spirited soloist, chamber player, and orchestral musician. She has performed internationally as concertmaster and soloist. Ms. Youssefian studied with Marilyn McDonald at Oberlin Conservatory, and completed her master’s degree at Rice University’s Shepherd School of Music with Kenneth Goldsmith. She is currently pursuing a master’s degree in Historical Performance at The Juilliard School. Ms. Youssefian has performed with Ars Lyrica Houston, Bach Society Houston, Mercury, Trinity Baroque Orchestra, New York Baroque Incorporated, The Sebastians, Les Arts Florissants at Dans le Jardin de William Christie, and Juilliard415 as concertmaster and concerto soloist.

Stephen Goist, Viola

Stephen Goist is currently a student in Juilliard’s Historical Performance program, where he studies Baroque viola, violin, and viola da gamba. As a member of Juilliard 415, the school’s period instrument ensemble, Stephen has performed across the United States and in the Netherlands, India, and New Zealand. Stephen is a member of the Dayton Philharmonic Orchestra, the ProMusica Chamber Orchestra, and is a frequent performer with Catacoustic Consort.

Shirley Hunt, Cello

Praised by The Strad as “stylish and accomplished,” cellist Shirley Hunt embraces an eclectic musical life as a soloist and collaborator in the bourgeoning historical performance field.  Ms. Hunt has performed and recorded with the nation’s leading period instrument ensembles including Handel and Haydn Society, Boston Baroque, Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra, American Bach Soloists, Musica Angelica, Portland Baroque Orchestra, and Bach Collegium San Diego. In New York City, she performs regularly with the viol consort Sonnambula and with the continuo ensemble Ruckus.  Ms. Hunt has performed at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Phillips Collection, and the Museum of Jurassic Technology, where she is an artist in residence.  She is in demand internationally for her continuo cello and viola da gamba playing in the Passions, Cantatas, and Concertos of J.S. Bach.  Originally from Portland, Oregon, Ms. Hunt was born into a musical family and is the younger sister of the late mezzo-soprano Lorraine Hunt Lieberson.
