When G.I. Gurdjieff first brought these sacred dances to Carnegie Hall in 1924, audiences were moved by both the “precision of their execution” and “gracefulness of the postures,” as one wrote in The New York Times. They were performed again in New York in 1961, but haven’t been shown publicly since.
So the performances May 21 at Columbia’s Miller Theatre are a rare opportunity to see the dervish and folk dances, tableaux and solemn prayers that Gurdjieff developed based on ritual dances from ancient traditions.
