    Navy, Marine Corps, Coast Guard personnel set to take over Liberty State Park during Fleet Week; Event to feature new certified 5K Run and Youth Obstacle Course

    NORFOLK, VA (NRMA) – Join the U.S. Navy, Marine Corps and Coast Guard as they showcase the latest capabilities of today’s maritime services at Liberty State Park in Jersey City, New Jersey on Sunday, May 26. Activities and demonstrations will run throughout the day from 10:30 am through 5:00 pm that are geared toward families and community entertainment.

    Now in its 4th year, Fleet Week at Liberty State Park celebrates the sea services and gives area citizens an unparalleled opportunity to meet Sailors, Marines and Coast Guardsmen.

    New this year is a certified 5K Run (11:00 am start/9:30 am check-in), a 1-Mile Fun Run (10:30 am start/check-in 9:30 am), and a unique Youth City Challenge Obstacle Race (1:30 pm start/1:00 pm check-in), which are provided by City Challenge Obstacle Race.

    “It is a great honor to partner with the Navy, Marine Corps and Coast Guard for Fleet Week at Liberty State Park this year,” said Elvi Guzman, President of City Challenge Obstacle Race. “We’re confident that adding these new activities will help attract more families, both military and civilian, while promoting health and fitness in our community. Fleet Week is an amazing opportunity for everyone to come out and support those who serve our country, and get to know more about the sea services.”

    The organization offers a special discount code for reduced registration fees for retired and active duty military, simply use code “HERO” when registering.  (Note: Those who register with this code will be required to show valid military ID when picking up their race packet).

    In addition to the race components, the day will be filled with activities including Navy and Marine Corps helicopter landings (noon), with a Navy Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) fast rope demonstration; various military static displays and vehicles; a Navy Dive Tank with tic-tac-toe game challenges and Navy diver gear; EOD robotics; Marine Corps Martial Arts Program demonstrations and pull-up challenge; a Coast Guard Search and Rescue demonstration (12:30 pm); area food trucks; kids activities with bounce houses and face painting; as well as performances by the U.S. Fleet Forces “Brass Band” (12:15 pm); the U.S. Marine Corps Battle Color Detachment and Silent Drill Platoon (2:15 pm); and U.S. Coast Guard Silent Drill Team (1:30 pm & 3:30 pm).

    In conjunction with the World War I Centennial Commission, there will also be special performances by the 369th Experience Band (1:00 & 4:00 pm). The band is made up of musicians from a collection of Historically Black Colleges and Universities that pay homage to the contributions of African-Americans and Puerto Ricans in World War I through the eyes of the 369th U.S. Infantry Regiment, also known as James Reese Europe’s “Harlem Hellfighters.”

    For directions to Liberty State Park, from the New Jersey Turnpike, take exit 14B and follow signs to Liberty State Park. The event is held in partnership with the State of New Jersey, the City of Jersey City, the Department of Environmental Protection, the Division of Parks and Forestry and the State Park Service.
