It all started on a dreary night in 1816, when Mary Shelley dreamt of a “hideous phantasm,” a man patched together from the parts of other men. And for the 200 years since, that same Creature has continued to lurch and lumber through countless more nightmares. Much more than just a monster story, “Frankenstein” blends moments of brooding terror and sudden shock with questions of morality and the dangers of unrestrained scientific inquiry. Now that “phantasm” — and the monster who created him — mounts the stage of the Players Theatre in New York City this Halloween season, in this musical adaptation that features a score for a live, percussion-based chamber ensemble.
