Upcoming Virtual Programs:
Star Stories
Monday, May 11: 1:00pm – 1:45pm (ET)
For millennia, people have gazed at the night sky and told themselves stories about the pictures they see there. These same stars and constellations also allowed sailors to find their way back to port. Using images of the night sky, stories from different cultures and examples of simple navigation tools, an Intrepid Educator will help students view their sky in a whole new way. Register here.
Aviation Science (Grades 3–8)
Aviation Science Programs are proudly supported by: United Airlines
Tuesday, May 12: 1:00pm – 1:45pm (ET)
Students will discuss the parts of a plane and how nature influences shape and design. Educators will demonstrate the four forces of flight, and students will experiment with these concepts before creating their own simple flying machines. Fundamental concepts such as Bernoulli’s principle and aerodynamics will also be discussed. Register here.
Space Science – Appropriate for Ages 5–18
Tuesday, May 12: 3:00pm–3:45pm (ET)
Get a tour of the Space Shuttle Pavilion, home of the space shuttle Enterprise. An educator will discuss the Mercury-Atlas 7 and Gemini III missions that occurred during the Space Race, including Intrepid’s role as the primary recovery vessel for both missions. Children will learn about the vacuum of space and why astronauts need spacecraft and spacesuits when they venture into Earth’s orbit and beyond. Register here.
Virtual Intrepid Book Club
Tuesday, May 12: 6:00pm–8:00pm (ET)
The Yellow Birds by Kevin Powers
Students will discuss the parts of a plane and how nature influences shape and design. Educators will demonstrate the four forces of flight, and children will experiment with these concepts before creating their own simple flying machines. Classes will also explore the aircraft carrier Intrepid and examine the machinery that makes flight at sea possible. Register here.
Life Aboard Intrepid (Grades 3–8)
Wednesday, May 13: 1:00pm – 1:45pm (ET)
Students will articulate the purpose of an aircraft carrier and identify at least three crew member jobs held during Intrepid’s time of service. They will be taught the many ways in which life aboard Intrepid differed from life on land, and some of the adjustments sailors made to improve life aboard. Register here.
Explore Space Science (Grades 7–12)
Thursday, May 14: 1:00pm–1:45pm (ET)
Students will get a tour of the Space Shuttle Pavilion, home of the space shuttle Enterprise. An educator will discuss the Mercury-Atlas 7 and Gemini III missions that occurred during the Space Race, including Intrepid’s role as the primary recovery vessel for both NASA missions. Students will learn about the vacuum of space and why astronauts need spacecraft and spacesuits when they venture into Earth’s orbit and beyond. Register here.
Intrepid in the Pacific, World War II (Grades 7–12)
Friday, May 15: 1:00pm – 1:45pm (ET)
Using images and oral histories, students will discuss battles such as the Battle of the Philippines, the Battle of Leyte Gulf, and the Tokubetsu Kōgekitai kamikaze suicide attack tactic, introduced in October of 1944. The experiences of Intrepid’s crew will be explored, including the celebrated Gun Tub 10, a battle station assigned to African American crew members who braved their post to fire on kamikaze planes as the ship came under attack. Register here.
