Children’s Museum Of Manhattan (Cmom) To Host A Three-Day Cultural Fest To Celebrate Chinese New Year

Lion Puppet-Making Workshops and Chinese Language Lessons Among Special Activities to Help Families Honor the Year of the Horse

To welcome the Year of the Horse, the Children’s Museum of Manhattan (CMOM) will offer a series of special events and activities in honor of Chinese New Year from Friday, January 31 to Sunday, February 2. The Children’s Museum of Manhattan is located at 212 West 83rd Street between Broadway and Amsterdam Avenue.

On Saturday, February 1, the museum will welcome Chinese-American guest educator Susan Yang to the institution. Yang, the former Cultural Programs Coordinator at the Brooklyn Children’s Museum and a mom of three, will lead children in two different activities. From noon to 2pm, kids of all ages can join Yang and create their own mini lion puppets inspired by the colorful costumes of the lion dance. At 2:30pm, older kids (ages 5 and up) can sign up to meet with Yang and learn about the many special words and symbols that are used to decorate a “hong-bao”—an envelope that holds the special gifts children receive during the Chinese New Year. Kids will also have the opportunity to  design their own red envelopes to share with family and friends.

In addition, each day at 10am and 1pm, children ages four and under will have the chance to create a moveable horse puppet, explore the Chinese calendar and learn the Chinese character for “horse.”

The museum’s book of the week “The Dancing Dragon” by Marcia K. Vaughan will also keep with the Chinese New Year theme.
