    Celebrate the Korean Lunar New Year on February 2nd at the Staten Island Museum

    It’s the Year of the Pig!

    (Staten Island, NY – January 22, 2019) Say goodbye to the year of the Dog and hello to the year of the Pig as the Staten Island Museum and the Korean Community Development Center partner to present a celebration of Lunar New Year 설날 with traditional food, performances, and activities.

    The Lunar New Year celebration will take place at the Staten Island Museum, Building A on the campus of Snug Harbor on Saturday, February 2, 1pm – 4pm. Free with Museum Admission (which is suggested $8 Adults, $5 Seniors and Students, $2 for children 2-12). Tickets can be purchased in advance by visiting www.StatenIslandMuseum.org.

    “The Staten Island Museum is thrilled to partner again with our friends at the Korean Community Development Center to bring the community a fun and educational experience of Korean Culture. The family friendly festivities highlight music, dance, and traditional cuisine,” said Janice Monger, Staten Island Museum President & CEO.

    Enjoy Tteokguk (rice cake soup) and Jap-chae (sticky noodle with vegetables), try on a hanbok, and learn how to sae-bae. Experience a traditional Korean Fan dance, a drum performance, games, crafts, and more!

    Performance Schedule:

    • 1:00 – Traditional Royal Greeting by Ms. Lee Kumwon in the Lobby
    • 2:00 – Korean Fan Dance 부채춤 (Boo chae chum) is taken from the Korean words Buchae which means fan and Chum which means dance. This exuberant dance displays beautifully painted large fans forming various geometrical shapes, such as butterflies, a flower in full bloom, or a sea wave.
    • 3:00 – Drum performance 난타 (Nan-ta)
