“Black in Brooklyn” Trolley tour explores the Life and Accomplishments of Notable Black New Yorkers in history
In honor of Black History Month, Green-Wood hosts a trolley tour exploring New York City’s history of diversity, progress, and activism. This trolley tour, led by Green-Wood historian Jeff Richman, will explore the life and accomplishments of many prominent black New Yorkers, as well as several abolitionists who fought for freedom in America. Highlights of the tour include Susan Smith McKinney Steward, the first black female doctor in the state; Jean-Michel Basquiat, innovative artist of the 1980s; and Jeremiah Hamilton, New York’s first black millionaire. The tour will also visit burial lots known in the nineteenth century as “the Colored Lots” and known today as “the Freedom Lots.” Richman will present the recent conservation work and research in association with these graves.
Green-Wood – 25th Street at 5th Avenue, Brooklyn. Meet inside the main gate.
Take the “R” train to 25th Street in Brooklyn and walk up the hill one block and into the Cemetery.
Free parking is available.
COST: The trolley tour is $20; $15 for members of The Green-Wood Historic Fund and members of the Brooklyn Historical Society. Reservations are recommended.
