The Cathedral of St. John the Divine Presents
Artist in Residence Alessandra Belloni’s
“Tarantata: Spider Dance”
Wednesday, June 29
8:00 pm – 9:30 pm
Alessandra Belloni, internationally renowned singer, dancer, percussionist and Cathedral Artist in Residence, returns with Italian folk and dance ensemble I Giullari Di Piazza in “Tarantata: Spider Dance,” a sensual and mystical show featuring Tarantella trance dances, healing chants, and Brazilian rhythms, on Wednesday, June 29 at 8 p.m. at the Cathedral of St. John the Divine, 1047 Amsterdam Avenue (at 112th Street).
The performance reenacts ancient Italian folk rituals, traditionally celebrated on the Feast of St. Paul in the small church of San Paolo di Galatina in the Apulia region, used to heal victims of spiritual and psychological maladies caused by the mythical bite of the tarantula. Filtered through Belloni and I Guillari Di Piazza’s artistic imagination, these ancient rituals, rooted in Christian and shamanic symbolism, come alive in ecstatic dance and cathartic, participatory euphoria.
