In 1954, Coco Chanel reopened her business at the age of 70, following a 14-year retirement (some said “exile”). She had dominated la mode for decades, but couture had changed. Chanel’s first postwar collection was brutally panned by the French press. Her second act would require a detour—by way of New York. And so the chameleon Coco Chanel remade herself one last time, with a boost from Broadway. Join author Rhonda Garelick as she introduces her new, revealing cultural biography Mademoiselle: Coco Chanel and the Pulse of History (Random House, September 2014) in conversation with New Yorker staff writer and award-winning author, Judith Thurman. Book signing and reception to follow.

$15 for Museum members; $25 general public.
