(Staten Island, NY – September 24, 2015) The Staten Island Museum ushers in autumn with the 65th annual Staten Island Museum Fence Show. Artists and artisans of all types and skill levels are invited to take to the fence to display and/or sell their works to the meandering audiences of friends and neighbors on Saturday, October 3, 11am – 5pm on the front lawn of the newly opened Staten Island Museum at Snug Harbor.
For the 65th year, the Staten Island Museum is keeping their bucolic tradition alive and for the first time, has a Museum on the grounds to explore beyond the fences. Thousands will gather to see the conventional, the abstract, and the extraordinary on the grounds of Snug Harbor Cultural Center & Botanical Gardens with the newly restored Staten Island Museum at Snug Harbor as a backdrop.
“We’ve been hosting the Fence Show for 65 years now. Since anyone who makes their own art can participate, the Fence Show is most democratic of art affairs. I’ve always thought that Staten Island, and specifically Snug Harbor, was such a great place to be an artist, have a studio and show your work. It’s the dream – to be able to make friends, make art, & now we have a beautiful facility to show our collection, to grow and nurture our community,” said the Museum’s VP of Exhibitions and Programs, Diane Matyas.
Since its founding, the Staten Island Museum has always been focused on real things; real objects and real experiences. When the Fence Show began in 1951, co-sponsored at the time by the Staten Island Chamber of Commerce, their idea was to bring “art to the people” and they accomplished their goal tenfold. That year, the New York Times estimated that 15,000 people came to explore the creativity on display. The Museum continues this “ritual of real” through the Fence Show and through their exhibits in their new location in the Staten Island Museum at Snug Harbor which is now open to the public.
For the past three years, we have been treated to the Musical Chairs Chamber Ensemble’s Open-Air Music Festival and again this year the anticipated 2,500 people will enjoy the original music wafting through the air as they peruse the prolific Staten Island art scene.
Artist spaces range from $35-$75 and are still available for individuals 8 years old and up. Visit the Museum’s website for details and an application. Audience admission and parking is free. The Staten Island Museum at Snug Harbor is located at 1000 Richmond Terrace, a 5 minute bus ride (S40/S44) from the Staten Island Ferry.
