4th Annual Space & Science Festival To Celebrate Art And Science At The Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum
Thursday, July 23 – Sunday July 26
Experience an exciting celebration of space, STEM (science, technology, engineering and math), and how art enhances scientific learning at the 4th annual Space & Science Festival at the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum, located at Pier 86 (46th Street and 12th Avenue) in Manhattan, from Thursday, July 23–Sunday, July 26.
The festival will offer guests a variety of interactive displays, activities, exhibitions and presentations, as well as a family astronomy night and a free movie screening on the flight deck of the Intrepid. Highlights of the 2015 Space & Science Festival include:
Thursday, July 23
7:30pm: Visitors can enjoy a free screening of the epic science fiction thriller Close Encounters of the Third Kind (1977) on Intrepid’s flight deck. The film will be introduced by astrophysicist Steve Howell, who searches for Earth-like planets as the project scientist for NASA’s Kepler and K2 missions. Guests are encouraged to bring lawn chairs, picnic baskets and blankets; however, alcohol is not permitted. Doors open at 7:30pm and the film begins at sunset, weather permitting. Space is limited. Seating is on a first come, first served basis, and there is no admission after 8:30pm. Museum members may reserve tickets in advance for priority admission.
Friday, July 24
6:45pm–10:00pm: All ages can enjoy a free Family Astronomy Night under the stars, with special guest Steve Howell, an astrophysicist for NASA who searches for Earth-like planets and will discuss what scientists think about alien life. Visitors can also view the night sky with telescopes on the flight deck, as well as marvel at Space Panorama, a performance by Andrew Dawson that tells the story of the Apollo 11 moon landing in 1969.
Saturday, July 25
12:30pm & 3:30pm: Andrew Dawson will re-create the entire 1969 Apollo 11 moon landing with nothing more than his hands, a table and Shostakovich’s Symphony no. 10 in Space Panorama, a magical performance that takes visitors from Houston to the moon and returns us safely to Earth. Free with Museum admission.
1:00pm & 4:00pm: NASA astrophysicist Steve Howell and former White House pastry chef Bill Yosses will be merging gourmet cuisine and outer space with their presentation The Interplanetary Kitchen. Discover why the physical laws that make desserts delicious also shed light on exoplanets hundreds of light-years away. Free with Museum admission.
12:00pm–5:00pm: Visitors can visit the Intergalactic Travel Bureau to plan the holiday experience of a lifetime—on another planet! Rock climbing on Mars? Skiing on Pluto? This interactive science theater features “travel agents” and astronomers who use real data to create a personalized vacation in space. Free with Museum admission.
Throughout the day, activities and displays by FIRST Robotics, NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Amateur Astronomers Association of New York, Coca-Cola and Intrepid Museum educators will take place on Pier 86. In Hangar 3, Final Frontier Design, a Brooklyn-based company that develops aerospace safety garments for the next generation of space travel, will be on hand for visitors to learn how spacesuits are made and try on its latest prototype gloves.
Museum is open from 10:00am–6:00pm.
