In celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month, the Afro Latin Jazz Alliance (ALJA) and Harlem School of the Arts (HSA) are inviting the community in Harlem and beyond to participate in the 3rd Annual Pueblo Harlem, Familia, Comunidad y Artes / Family, Community and the Arts on October 10, 2015. The event will take place at the Herb Alpert Center, the official home of the Harlem School of the Arts located at 645 St. Nicholas Avenue and admission is free.
Designed for children and their families, jazz aficionados and community members, Pueblo Harlem celebrates the history and diversity of Harlem through a day of music, folkloric and popular dance, and art. This FREE event, made possible with support from Bronx Lebanon Hospital Center and Councilman Mark Levine, features performances by the Afro Latin Jazz Alliance’s Youth Orchestra, the Fat Afro Latin Jazz Cats, a workshop exploring Brazilian Rhythms by the GRIOT Youth Ensemble, Afro-Cuban folkloric dance classes led by the renowned dancer La Mora, visual arts demonstrations, workshops, and more. Closing finale will present GRAMMY winners Arturo O’Farrill and the Afro Latin Jazz Orchestra featuring guest vocalist Sammy Gonzalez, Jr. and spoken word artist Christopher “Chilo” Cajias performing classic dance tunes in addition to songs from their 2015 GRAMMY Award winning album, The Offense of the Drum (Motema).
