The Society of Illustrators is proud to share a list of Featured and International Guests who will appear at the MoCCA Arts Festival, taking place April 6-7 at Metropolitan West in New York City. These stellar artists join this year’s previously announced Guests of Honor Edie Fake, Liana Finck, Keith Knight and Bill Sienkiewicz. Featured and International Artists signing and programming schedules will be announced soon. We are honored to present some of the most acclaimed comics artists in the world as this year’s Featured Guests:

About the Artists:

Jon Burgerman is a UK born, NYC based artist instigating improvisation and play through drawing and spectacle. He is a purveyor of doodles and is often credited and referenced as the leading figure in the popular ‘Doodle’ art style. Burgerman studied Fine Art at The Nottingham Trent University, graduating in 2001. In 2008, IDN published a monograph of Burgerman’s work titled Pens Are My Friends, and Kidrobot produced a selection of vinyl toys called “The Heroes of Burgertown.” His book titles include SPLAT! (Penguin Random House), It’s Great to Create (Chronicle Books), Rhyme Crime (Oxford University Press), Daily Doodle, andBurgerworld (both Laurence King Publishing). Burgerman’s illustrations can be seen on merchandise and signage for the 2019 MoCCA Arts Festival.

Liza Donnelly is a cartoonist and writer with The New Yorker Magazine, and resident cartoonist at CBS News. She also writes for the New York Times, Forbes.com, and Medium. She has been profiled globally in numerous publications and her work has been exhibited around the world. Donnelly received an honorary doctorate from University of Connecticut, where she delivered the commencement address to the Graduate School ceremony. Donnelly is a Cultural Envoy for the US State Department, traveling around the world speaking about freedom of speech, cartoons and women’s rights. She is the author/editor of sixteen books and was a finalist for the Thurber Prize for American Humor. She wrote the critically acclaimed history, Funny Ladies: The New Yorker’s Greatest Women Cartoonists and Their Cartoons. She is a charter member of an international project, Cartooning for Peace, helping to promote understanding around the world through humor; and is one of the founding members of USA FECO, the US chapter of the international cartoonists’ organization FECO.

Aisha Franz is a Berlin-based comic book artist and illustrator. Her graphic novel Earthling was first published in Germany in 2011, followed byBrigitte(2012) and Shit Is Real (2016). Earthling and Shit Is Real have both been published in English-language editions by Drawn and Quarterly. Her short stories have been published in several anthologies such as Kuš and as an illustrator she has worked for clients including the MIT Technology Review and the New York Times, among others. She also co-organizes the CLUBHOUSE collaboration project with Berlin-based publisher Colorama. Aisha Franz’s presence at MoCCA is supported by the Goethe-Institut.

Peter and Maria Hoey are brother and sister artists. Their illustrations appear in newspapers and magazines, commercials, and advertising worldwide. Since 2007 they have independently published their comics under the name COIN-OP. The first hardcover collection of their work:Coin-Op Comics Anthology 1997-2017, published by Top Shelf Productions / IDW Publishing, is out now. Their early comics appeared in many issues of the legendary BLAB! Magazine. They are currently hard at work on their first full length graphic novel. Peter and Maria Hoey are represented by Rapp | Art.

Meg Hunt is an illustrator working and living in Portland, OR. Her first first picture book, Interstellar Cinderella (Chronicle Books) received starred reviews from Booklist and Publisher’s Weekly, who also listed it as one of their best summer books of the year. Hunt was featured as one ofPublisher’s Weekly‘s Flying Starts for Summer 2015 as well. Hunt created the badge art for this year’s MoCCA Arts Festival.

Belgium-born artist Michel Kichka relocated to Israel in the 1970s to further his education in graphics. Since then, he has worked as an editorial cartoonist for Israeli and French TV channels. He draws frequently for Courier International and Regards. He is the former president of the Association of Israeli cartoonists. He was awarded the Israeli Prize “Dosh Cartoonist Award” in 2008 and the French government made him a Knight of Arts and Letters in 2011. In 2016 he released the book Second Generation: What I Didn’t Tell My Father (Europe Comics), a comic about his relationship with his father, a concentration-camp survivor.

French artist Florent Ruppert is one of the most innovative artists working in comics today. Throughout his career, he has produced all of his comics in collaboration with Jérôme Mulot in a unique, shared writing and drawing process that obscures the work of either hand. The pair have produced a series of darkly satirical and formally inventive books published by L’Association. Their second book, Panier de Singe, won the Prix Révélation at the 2007 Festival International de la Bande Dessinée in Angoulême, France, and was published in English as Barrel of Monkeys by Rebus Books in 2012. More recently, they have produced a number of full-color albums for Dupuis, including collaborations with Bastien Vivès and Olivier Schrauwen. Their second North American book, The Perineum Technique, was recently published by Fantagraphics Books. Ruppert’s presence at MoCCA is supported by the Cultural Services of the French Embassy, Fantagraphics Books, and Europe Comics.

Mark Alan Stamaty has enjoyed a diverse career as a cartoonist and children’s book author. His 1973 children’s book Who Needs Donuts? Is a contemporary classic and remains in print. In 1978 he began drawing the weekly comic strip narrative MacDoodle St. for the Village Voice. The collected edition was recently republished with a new comics afterword by New York Review Comics. His other comics series include Washingtoon for the Voice, the Washington Post and Time Magazine and Boox for the New York Times Book Review. His works for younger readers include Alia’s Mission andShake, Rattle & Turn That Noise Down! His first children’s book,Yellow Yellow with writer Frank Asch, is forthcoming in a new edition from Drawn and Quarterly.

James Sturm is a cartoonist and educator. He is currently the Director of The Center for Cartoon Studies, a two-year cartooning school located in White River Junction, Vermont. In 1991 James received a Master of Fine Arts from the School of Visual Arts, moved to Seattle and co-founded the alternative weekly, The Stranger. That same year Fantagraphics began publishing his Eisner-nominated comic book series The Cereal Killings. In 1998 Drawn and Quarterly published the story Hundreds of Feet Below Daylight, part of a trilogy of American historical fiction pieces. The last installment of the trilogy, The Golem’s Mighty Swing, became a best-seller and an award-winning graphic novel. The book has been translated into several languages and was named “Best Comic 2001″ by Time Magazine. James’ most recent books include Satchel Paige: Striking Out Jim Crow, James Sturm’s America, the Adventures in Cartooning series (with CCS alumni Andrew Arnold and Alexis Frederick-Frost), and Market Day. Sturm’s latest book, Off Season (Drawn and Quarterly), will be available to purchase at the Fest.

The MoCCA Arts Festival is a 2-day multimedia event, Manhattan’s largest independent comics, cartoon and animation festival, drawing over 7,000 attendees each year.
