On Monday, January 15, 2018, Manhattan Country School eighth-graders will honor the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. by taking to the streets of Manhattan to speak out about what they consider to be the most pressing civil rights issues of their time. MCS families, alumni, staff, friends, supporters and the general public are invited to participate in this educational and uplifting annual event.

As the oldest students at Manhattan Country School, the eighth-graders are responsible for planning this annual march—from choosing the theme and selecting the route to writing the speeches and publicizing the event. The march, now in its 30th year, is part of the school’s core curriculum, which includes activism and community building beginning in pre-K.

The theme of this year’s march is “A New Revolution: Youth and Social Change,” inspired by the quote “Every generation needs a new revolution,” which many attribute to Thomas Jefferson. The march, which starts at 10 a.m. at Riverside Park’s Eleanor Roosevelt Monument and ends at approximately 2 p.m. at Manhattan Country School, will follow a route that includes these stops:

    1. Eleanor Roosevelt Monument (Riverside Park at 72nd Street)
    2. Strawberry Fields/James Baldwin Residence (Central Park West at 72nd Street)
    3. New-York Historical Society (Central Park West at 77th Street)
    4. Soldiers’ and Sailors’ Monument (Riverside Park at 89th Street)
    5. Joan of Arc Memorial (Riverside Park at 93rd Street)
    6. Manhattan Country School (150 West 85th Street, between Columbus and Amsterdam avenues.)
