NEW YORK, NY – April 18th, 2016 – The Poetry Society of New York (www.poetrysocietyny.org) is pleased to announce the details of The Poetry Brothel (www.thepoetrybrothel.com) at House of Yes (http://houseofyes.org), Brooklyn’s premiere venue for alternative and immersive nightlife, located at 2 Wyckoff Avenue in Bushwick. The Poetry Brothel: Seance will take place on Sunday, May 8th. The bar opens at 8pm, seating begins at 8:30pm, with the staged show starting promptly at 9pm. Attendees must be 21+. Vintage-style evening wear and/or themed costumes are encouraged but not required. General admission seating is first come, first serve.
The Poetry Brothel is an interactive poetry experience set up as a decadent fin de siècle brothel. Poets performing under pseudonyms offer private, one-on-one poetry readings of their original work in candlelit back rooms…for money. The main room presents an immersive cabaret, which consists of live music, burlesque performances, vaudeville, fortune tellers and other related acts. The Poetry Brothel premiered in New York City in January 2008 and now has branches in Los Angeles, San Francisco, Portland, New Orleans, Paris, London, Barcelona, Dublin, Brussels, Bogota, and Valparaiso and has inspired satellite events across the world.
The Poetry Brothel’s first ever Seance event will be an evening dedicated to the occult art of communicating with the dead. The Madame & Tennessee Pink will bring back some of their favorite poetic spirits for the audiences exclusive entertainment. The featured musical guest on May 8th is Sweet Megg & The Wayfarers, (sweetmeggswayfarers.bandcamp.com) who describe their sound as a mixture of “Jazz, Cigarettes, Sex, Guitars, Paris, New Orleans, Whiskey, & Scotch.” Other featured entertainers include aerialists, The Lost Boys of Circus Solaris (http://circussolaris.com), fire dancer Evgeniya Radilova (http://evgeniyaradilova.com), and one of New York’s most lascivious burlesque dancers, Cassandra Rosebeetle (http://www.cassandrarosebeetle.com). Tarot card readings, body paintings, and charcoal portraits will also be available for purchase. The featured poet and esteemed guest for the evening will be Matthew Yeager.
Matthew Yeager’s poems have appeared in Sixthfinch, Gulf Coast, Minnesota Review, Bat City Review, and elsewhere, as well as Best American Poetry 2005 and Best American Poetry 2010. His short film “A Big Ball of Foil in a Small NY Apartment” was an official selection at thirteen film festivals in 2009-2010, picking up three awards. Other distinctions include the Barthelme Prize in short prose and two MacDowell fellowships. The co-curator of the long running KGB Monday Night Poetry Series, his first book, Like That, was released last month from Forklift Books.
