On Sunday, June 4, 2023, the vibrant streets of Jackson Heights, Queens, came alive with the 30th annual New Queens Pride Parade and Festival, marking a significant celebration of LGBTQ+ pride and diversity. The event, which began at noon, featured a parade along 37th Avenue from 89th Street to 75th Street, culminating in a lively festival at 75th Street and 37th Avenue that continued until 6:00 pm.
This year’s parade was especially notable as it commemorated the 30th anniversary of Queens Pride, an event founded in 1993 by Daniel Dromm and Maritza Martinez to honor the memory of Julio Rivera, a gay man whose tragic death in Jackson Heights became a catalyst for LGBTQ+ activism in the borough. Over the past three decades, the parade has grown to become New York City’s second-largest Pride march, reflecting the rich cultural tapestry of Queens, often hailed as the world’s most ethnically diverse urban area.
The 2023 celebration drew thousands of participants and spectators, all eager to showcase their support for the LGBTQ+ community. The parade featured an array of colorful floats, spirited performances, and representatives from various community groups, all marching in solidarity and celebration. The festival that followed offered attendees a diverse array of food, entertainment, and informational booths, creating a space for both celebration and education.
This year’s honorary grand marshals exemplified the leadership, advocacy, and diversity of Queens. Honorees included City Council Members Linda Lee, Lynn Schulman, Selvena N. Brooks-Powers, Shekar Krishnan, as well as organizations like Drag Story Hour, the CUNY LGBTQIA+ Consortium, and activist Ceyenne Doroshow. Their participation underscored the event’s commitment to inclusivity and community engagement.
The significance of the Queens Pride Parade extends beyond its festive atmosphere; it serves as a powerful reminder of the progress made in the fight for LGBTQ+ rights and the ongoing efforts to achieve equality. As one of the earliest Pride events in New York City each year, it sets the tone for a month-long series of celebrations, fostering a sense of unity and pride among participants and spectators alike.
