Initiated on September 11, 2001 as an act of remembrance...as a
tribute to the many lives lost and to the great pain felt by so
many, the Tribute in Lights was lit up 6 months following that fateful
day in 2001 for over 2 months then once again each year ever since
on 9/11 (September 11).
Hopefully these lights will continue to glow on a yearly basis
without fail, perhaps even after buildiing of the new WTC has been
completed.
For some they're simply towers of light which serve as a form of
commemoration and for others of us these beams are beacons of hope.
However you see their purpose and whatever effect they may have
on you, they're definitely quite the sight amongst the lit structures
which make up the Manhattan Skyline.
NOTE: that skyscraper you see there just
in front of the Tribute in Lights is Seven (7) World Trade Center...completed in 2006
Also note that this year, 2006 the Tribute in Lights will take place once again beginning at sundown. The beams of light will be at West and Morris Streets in Lower Manhattan and visible from other locations near and far.
