Heroes Among us
was conceived by The
New York City Comic Book Museum as a tribute to the real-life heroes
of this city. In this exhibit we have collected art from Marvel Comics'
HEROES book and Alternative Comics' 9-11: Emergency Relief and a few individuals
to allow you to experience the raw power and beauty of the comic book
medium.
Comic books have
always played an important role in reflecting the Zeitgeist and American
culture. In the Forties, comics gave us Captain America as our war hero.
In the Sixties, Spider-Man, The Hulk and the Fantastic Four were introduced
to help allay our fears of the atom. Even the introduction of the X-Men
in 1963 was a parable calling for racial harmony and peaceful coexistence
at the height of civil unrest and continued segregation in our society.
The comics you
see on display today continue in the same vein as their predecessors.
They are here to remind us of world we live in. They are here to remind
us never to forget. But most importantly, they are here to remind us of
the heroes among us.

I'd
like to thank the NYC Comic Book Museum, the Fire Museum and all others
involved for bringing us this important exhibition. I personally found
some of them to be just as touching as any of the many other images I've
seen since September 11th.
I
hadn't set my eyes on a comic book since childhood. But to see Captain
America weeping in one piece of artwork and recovering from disaster in
yet another is really something else.
Below
on this page is just a small sampling of the artwork at the exhibition.
