Crossing the East River and connecting the boroughs of The Bronx and
Queens is the Whitestone Bridge. Its total length is just under that of
the Queensboro & Manhattan Bridges. Perhaps in a rush to complete
it's building in time for the 1939 World's Fair (which took place in Flushing,
Queens), the bridge was completed six months ahead of schedule......'just
23 months after construction began.
During its first year of operation it carried about 17,000 vehicles per
day. Today that number is over 110,000. Unfortunately, we're not allowed
on the bridge, that is, without a car.
Construction Duration: 1927-1931
Total Length (including approaches): 7,140
feet
Width: 77 feet
# of Traffic Lanes: 6
Steel used in Structure: 22,300 tons
Cost to build: $19.65 million
Clearance above water: 157 feet
