in 1952 & located roughly between 42nd-48th Sts, off of 1st
Avenue is Headquarters for the United Nations. The UN was established
on October 24th, 1945 by 51 countries for the sake of preserving
and upholding peace and humanitarianism. Today there are 189 members
of the UN.
For each one of these members, there flies a flag in front of the
main office. They're placed in alphabetical order in accordance
with the English language....i.e., Afghanistan's
flag flies on 48th St. and Zimbabwe's
flag is on 42nd St.
Inside are wonderful works of art, as well as other parts of the
building(s) itself, donated from many parts of the world. These
range from the Japanese Peace Bell donated by Japan, the Chinese
Ivory Carving donated by China, the Foucault Pendulum donated by
the Netherlands, the Trusteeship Council Chamber given by Denmark
and the Economic and Social Council Chamber given by Sweden....'just
to name a few.
Basically, the UN is made of six main parts: the General Assembly,
the Security Council, the Economic and Social Council, the Trusteeship
Council, the Secretariat and the International Court of Justice.
