The Frick Collection

1 East 70th Street, New York, NY 10021

The Frick Collection, so named after Henry Clay Frick, is where one will find some of the most exceptional works of Western Art. Ranging from the Renaissance through the late nineteenth century, the Collection includes works by such celebrated artists as Bellini, Constable, Corot, Fragonard, Gainsborough, Goya, El Greco, Holbein, Ingres, Manet, Monet, Rembrandt, Renoir, Titian, Turner, Velazquez, Vermeer, and Whistler. Altogether, it has a permanent collection of over 1,100 works of art. Furthermore, the Frick’s galleries contain fine French porcelain, Italian bronzes, sculptures, and period furniture. Moreover, there are ongoing presentations and exhibitions of additional artwork as well as lectures and even concerts. Check their site for current/upcoming events.

History:

In nineteenth century Pennsylvania there was a man who grew up with little formal education. He went on to become a pioneer in the Pittsburgh coke and steel industry and was a millionaire by the age of thirty. This man was Henry Clay Frick (1849-1919).

Since his early years he’d always shown a great appreciation for the arts through prints and sketches he had acquired. But it wasn’t until 1895, with only a few paintings in his possession, that he began on an intensive stretch of art collecting.

In 1913, construction began on Henry Frick’s New York mansion at Seventieth Street and Fifth Avenue.

This mansion was designed with Mr. Frick’s art collection in mind. Gallery rooms were set up during the mansion’s construction. All of this was also carried out with the understanding that Frick had intended for his mansion and art holdings, within his will, be given to the public as a gallery of art. It was to be called The Frick Collection. He died in 1919.

After several years of transforming the Mansion into a museum, The Frick Collection opened to the public in December, 1935.
