Called the "Museum without walls", the South Street Seaport Museum was founded in 1967. It's comprised of exhibition galleries, a working 19th century print shop, a boat building shop, maritime crafts center, children's center, library and Museum Store. It's also made up of the architectural landmarks that line the streets and the historic ships docked at the Seaport. Its mission: "To preserve, interpret and display the history of New York as a world port, highlighting both the South Street Seaport as a destination, but also the tremendous contribution of the maritime enterprises to the City, the State and Union."

Activities for the whole family can be found here at the museum. Through workshops, school programs, tours, films/lectures, adult programs and much more, the museum offers so much to see and experience.

Now on to my favorite part. Them thar Ships!!!!.....I feel like a kid now...lol. For a small fee you could board one or more of the ships. They are as follow:

Pioneer
Schooner -- Built 1885 - Length: 102 feet - Breadth: 22 feet - Gross Tonnage: 47 - Mast Height: 76.6 feet

Peking
Four Masted Barque -- Built in 1911 - Length: 377 feet - Breadth: 47 feet - Gross Tonnage: 3100 - Depth of 26 feet - Main Mast Height: 170 feet - Passenger Capacity: 32

Wavertree
Full Rigged Ship -- Built in 1885 - Length: 293 feet - Breadth: 40.2 feet - Gross Tonnage: 2170 - Depth of 24.4 feet
Guided tours available through the museum of this ship's ongoing restoration

Lettie G. Howard (National Historic Landmark)
Schooner -- Built in 1893 - Length: 125.4 feet - Breadth: 21.1 feet
Sail training programs offered aboard this schooner by the museum

Ambrose (National Historic Landmark)
Steel Lightship -- Built in 1908 - Length: 112 feet - Breadth: 29 feet - Gross Tonnage: 488
Visitors can board the ship for a small fee during regular museum hours

W.O. Decker
Wood Tugboat -- Built in 1930 - Length: 52 feet - Breadth: 15 feet
