Terminals:
1 Bay Street, Staten Island, NY 10301
4 South Street, New York, NY 10004

Located at the lower tip of Manhattan, just above Battery Park and below the South Street Seaport is the Staten Island Ferry Terminal.

Now, why you might ask would I want to take it? Heck I don’t know anybody in Staten Island! I don’t even know if I’d like Staten Island. Why would I want to go there? Right? Well, You’d take it to get a clearer perspective of this great city. It’s hard to get a good look at some of our buildings when there are so many other in the way. Another good reason is that it’s free. Did you hear me? FREE! Yup!

There’s a ferry leaving at just about every half hour and the trip to Staten Island is roughly 20 minutes? It might just be a bit more than that. But to feel that wind hitting your face and rushing through your hair as you stand close to the very edge of the boat is quite a feeling. And you could definitely get to stand near the edge! There are gates at both ends which keep you just a coupla’ feet from the very tip of the boat. Along the way you’ll catch sight of passing ships, boats and maybe even a schooner or two. There’s also a decent view of the Statue of Liberty and the Verrazano Bridge in the distance.

There are plenty of seats aboard, bathrooms, and an upper and lower level. During the hot sticky summer days of NYC it’s a treat to get away for an hour on this trip. And heck, if you’re half human and half penguin like myself, it ain’t so bad in the winter either. Whether you’re a student, traveller, or someone who’s simply got an hour to kill while walking around the lower tip of Manhattan, it’s well worth it. If you want to bring a camera, then by all means, although it’s awfully hard to keep it very still during the ride.
