Gershwin, Bernstein, Sondheim. The American musical would not be the internationally acclaimed art form that combines narrative, song, dance and acting, without the many Jewish composers and lyricists whose works ignited the Broadway stage. Explore the American Jewish Songbook at a special worship service to be held at The Village Temple, in the heart of Greenwich Village, the second in a series of SynaplexTM Shabbat experiences.
The evening begins Friday, December 2, at 6:30 p.m., with an Erev Shabbat worship service, led by Rabbi Chava Koster and Cantor Faith Steinsnyder. Cantor Steinsnyder, joined by Anita Hollander, will perform a Sermon in Song featuring works by Jewish luminaries. The congregation will recognize its new members.
A special Junior Congregation worship service for children ages 8-12 will be held, also at 6:30, while children ages 3-7 will attend Shabbat Kinder Care.
An All-American Oneg follows the service, as does a Broadway Sing-along, where everyone will join in favorite songs from well-known shows. An RSVP and donation of $10 per person are requested.
“We are excited to highlight the contributions of Jewish composers and songwriters and learn about their formative roles in American culture. In its fifth year, our alternative Shabbat experience, Synaplex at The Village Temple, is designed to speak to a broad range of those who live in downtown Manhattan, many of whom have no formal contact with the organized Jewish community at this point in their lives. We welcome all to learn and share with us at Synaplex Shabbat services,” said Wendy Kaplan, Co-president of The Village Temple.
The Friday night worship service and Oneg are open to adults and children, all ages.
