With the support of New York’s Spanish consulate and collaborations with cultural institutions, filmmakers, distributors, visual artists and producers, they will present a diverse selection of the best in Spanish contemporary art and film.
The series starts with a two-day kickoff on Friday, June 24th with live Flamenco music and dancing by the trio FLAMENCO: inside/out in the public plaza, followed by a free screening of Spain’s master filmmaker Carlos Saura’s Flamenco Flamenco. This film explores both traditional and innovative flamenco styles, creating an immersive visual and aural viewer experience. Showcasing artists such as Paco de Lucia, Manolo Sanlucar, Estrella Morente, and Eva Yerbabuena, the film was shot over seven weeks on a former Seville Expo '92 pavilion and is Saura's sixth collaboration with the great cinematographer Vittorio Storaro.
On June 25th (2 - 7 pm), we will present an eclectic selection of Spanish shorts, animation and experimental pieces, music videos, and video art. Mediamakers include students from Pompeu Fabra University, emerging award winners such as Nestor F, Albert Merino, Neus Ballús, Adrian Orr Serrano, and Victor Carrey, the popular Barcelona-based band The Pinker Tones, and a special presentation of the NY Spanish festival REGION 0. For many films this screening will be the US or NY premiere. In addition, the stunning Bar Basque will host a short wine and light pintxos afternoon reception.
Monthly screening events will continue through December 2011 and include award-winning films such as Rotterdam Film Festival Jury award winner Finisterrae by Sergio Caballero, Bon Appettit by David Pinillos, Goya Winner’s Best new director, and documentaries including Murals by Pilar Pérez Solano, which is being shown in collaboration with the Joan Miro Foundation and The Land Inhabited by Anna Sanmarti.
Our objective is to expand the ideas, notions and visions that people associate with Spain and Spanish talent, and to provide a new outlet for emerging Spanish artists to show their work to a NYC audience. "Window to Spain would not be possible without the partnership with the Big Screen Plaza and the support of the Spanish consulate in NYC. We are excited to create this new NYC destination for Spanish film and art," stated Steffie Kinglake, Co-Director of Telegraph21.
