Come Explore The Lives Of People Of African Decent In Old Brooklyn With A Very Special Free Day At Two Of New York City’s Landmarked Treasures: The Wyckoff Farmhouse Museum And Weeksville Heritage Center.
On Saturday, February 23rd, 2008 from 12 noon to 4 pm, The Wyckoff Farmhouse Museum and Weeksville Heritage Center will host a FREE event with various activities to discuss and commemorate the African-American experience in Brooklyn, New York.
The day begins at 12 noon with a tour of the Wyckoff Farmhouse Museum emphasizing the lives of African-Americans in colonial Brooklyn. At 1 o’clock, Dr. Sherrill Wilson, their speaker for the 3rd Annual Dr. Joan B. Maynard Memorial Lecture, will give an invigorating discussion about why African-Americans came to Brooklyn as slaves or freemen, and eventually rose to create their own town, Weeksville, in “Traveling the New York African-American Experience from 1637 - 1865”.

In conjunction with the Bronx Council on the Arts, The Bronx Museum is proud to present Joe Conzo: Born in the Bronx, a book signing event with Hip Hop's first photographer.
Born in the Bronx is a striking anthology of Hip Hop's baby steps. Not only does it capture the emergence of a burgeoning culture but also the fashion and character of the surrounding community. The book includes the improvisational artwork of previously unpublished street flyers of the era, Polaroids buried for decades in basements across the Bronx, and testimonials from the most scholarly historians of Hip Hop culture - the legends and pioneers who lived it!

THE 2008 JEEP® UNION SQUARE STREET SESSIONS IN NYC

Taking place at Union Square Park

A field of 20 of the world’s top professional snowboarders, including Olympic silver medalist Danny Kass and defending champion Eddie Wall, will compete head-to-head for a prize purse of $30,000 as the Jeep® Union Square Street Sessions professional snowboarding rail jam competition returns to New York City’s Union Square (17th St. @ Union Square East) on Thursday, February 7, 2008 from 4:30-8:30 pm.
Last year a crowd of more than 10,000 winter sports enthusiasts packed Union Square to see two dozen of the sport’s best performers showcase their skills on the largest customized urban rail ever produced for an event of this kind in New York City. This year, the 40' customized urban rail will have a 2008 Jeep Wrangler built right into it, so competitors will actually ride over the Jeep. In addition to watching airborne snowboarders silhouetted before the NYC skyline, attendees can also visit the action sports block party at Union Square from 3-6 pm for athlete autograph sessions, free giveaways and product demonstrations from such companies as; Jeep, Oakley, Red Bull, Mountain Creek Resort, Sunday River Resort and more. The event, which is being presented in partnership with New York City Parks and Recreation and the New York City Sports Commission, serves as a prelude to the NYC Parks & Recreation’s Winter Jam, a pro/am rail jam and winter carnival with snowshoeing and cross country skiing held in Central Park on Saturday, February 9.

Winter Jam in NYC - Central Park at the Naumburg Bandshell and Mall Concert Ground

The following information is from last year and is listed here so as to give you and idea as to what to expect.
This Free
event will feature the Annual Rail Jam with local snowboarders along with Live Performances by Matt White and DJ Mark Ronson. As well there'll be Hot Chocolate as provided by Dunkin Donuts, a Winter Greenmarket and other giveaways. But that's not all! There will also be Ice Sculpting demonstrations, Cross-country skiing and snowshoeing.
Winter Jam 2007 will host an array of activities that will bring the whole family out of hibernation. There will be all sorts of fun for the kids including a snow igloo, arts and crafts, and a bridge to the future inspired by New Line Cinema's The Last Mimzy (opening March 23, 2007). There will also be an Olympic luge display, ice sculpture demos and more!
Amateur snowboarders will take to the rails during the popular Rail Jam Open. Interested in participating?—you must register at nyc.gov/parks by February 5, 2007. Or you can watch the snowboarder-acrobat troupe Flying Aces fly and flip off a trampoline and enjoy live performances by Geffen recording artist Matt White, celebrity DJ Mark Ronson and rising hip hop star, Jibbs.
