East River Esplanade / Walk

72nd Street on up along the East River and the FDR Drive

Right off the East River, beginning at 63rd Street and ending around the lower 120’s is this long stroll. Entrances are at: 63rd, 70th, 78th, 81st & 82nd Sts and are comfortably distanced apart from each other above that.

Walking North, the stroll turns into John Finley Walk around 82nd Street. A little further up, you’ll be able to see a lighthouse at the northern tip of Roosevelt Island, yeah I know, a lighthouse in NYC???? Well, that’s not all, there’s also John Jay Park (76th – 78th St.), and Carl Schurz Park (83rd – 90th St) where you’ll find sunbathers, dog walkers, people of all sorts relaxing and taking in the day, ‘And even Gracie Mansion (home of our Mayor) at the very end of the Park. It’s around this area where you’ll also get a distant view of the Triborough Bridge (at least part of it).

At the southern end you’ve got great views of the Queensboro Bridge & Roosevelt Island along the way. Really nothing to brag about unless you’re there at night time…that is, at a reasonable hour. At night, the bridge is lit up and any/all other lights are glistening upon the waters. It’s a very safe park, but it’s advisable never to be anywhere late at night by yourself in an isolated area. I’m sure that rule applies no matter what city or country you’re in. So, If you’re in the area having a New Yorkled day and Central Park seems just too far a walk then this is the place to go!
