The China Institute in America. founded in 1926, exists today as a non profit educational and cultural institution. Known as the first organization for Chinese-American cultural relations to exist in America, this fine institute’s exhibitions are among the most celebrated in the world. Its aim is to “foster the understanding between the people of the US and the people of China through education, and to stimulate interest in and promote the study of Chinese culture in America.”

At the China Institute, one can find its gallery (established in 1966, which has presented over 80 highly focused exhibitions of Chinese painting, calligraphy, architecture, decorative art, folk art, photography and textile curated by internationally recognized scholars), Classes in the arts as well as language studies (Mandarin), Lectures, Programs for Adults and Children, and quite a host of other offerings.

The China Institute in America was founded by the accomplished and famed educator, John Dewey (1859-1952), an American educational philosopher, and his Chinese associate and student, Hu Shih, (1891-1962), a famous Chinese diplomat and scholar who later in time was president of Peking University and China’s ambassador to the United States.
