On September 15, 1997, our Mayor, the Governor & the Museum's Chairman joined alongside many other distinguished elected officials and members of the Jewish community gathered to cut the ribbon for the opening of this new museum. 'This Museum of Jewish Heritage - A Living Memorial to the Holocaust' exists with the purpose of educating people of all ages and backgrounds about the 20th Century Jewish experience, before, during and after the Holocaust.

The Museum houses a core exhibition of more than 2,000 historic photographs and 800 historical and cultural artifacts, plus many more objects which in all total more than 15,000. Visitors also can watch 24 original documentary films about the Jewish experience interspersed in the exhibition.

The building located right off of Robert F. Wagner Park consists of 3 floors. One covers Jewish Culture in Europe prior to the Holocaust; one is devoted to the Holocaust; and another pays tribute to life after the Holocaust. Its six-sided shape and tiered roof are symbolic of the six points of the Star of David and the six million Jews who perished in the Holocaust.

Located in Downtown / 18 First Place - Battery Park City
