Located on the upper west side of Manhattan is this wonderful 29.88 acres
of park which stretches from Cathedral Parkway at W. 110th Street to W.
123rd Street. Its eastern and western borders are Morningside Drive and
Morningside Avenue. The name of this park and the community it finds itself
in is so named for the cliff which separates Morningside Heights from
Harlem. Yours truly has walked along the streets of this area during a
few mornings and as the name suggests it's a sunny and bright walk to
be enjoyed by all. Try it in the crisp becoming days of Autumn and in
the chilly days of Winter and you'll find the walks about and within to
be quite pleasant. If you look around you can see vestiges of the battles
fought here during the revolutionary war. The cliff and its surrounding
area are very fort-like.
Those two great minds responsible for our Prospect
Park and Central Park amongst others,
Calvert Vaux and Frederick Law Olmsted also had their hand in the design
of this park. 'and what an achievement. What with great sights nearby
such as the Cathedral of St. John the Divine,
General Grant National Memorial, Riverside Church and Columbia University
to the west plus the wonders of Central Park to the south east, one can't
wrong with a walk through Morningside Park on any day of any season.
Taking place within the park are year-round activities for folks of all
ages. How's 'bout visiting the Friends
of Morningside Park website to learn more about events past and present
and to catch sight of plenty of photos.
