On December 13th, 2001, the beautiful Dana
Discovery Center was transformed into a Gingerbread House through the
magic of illumination never before seen in NYC.
This event which included special performances
by the Boys Choir of Harlem and a Gospel Brass Band made a December Evening,
originally forecast as dreary and wet, one to remember. By the way, it
didn't rain and the weather was quite warm for a late Autumn Day!...could
it have been a sign or a Godsend? Perhaps a Blessing?
Nonetheless, there were treats for the kids
through Natural Ornament Making activities and refreshments as well....'nothin'
like Apple cider and cookies to make the evening warm and fuzzy! Don'tcha
think?

Responsible for this festive evening is the
Women's Committee of the Central
Park Conservancy who has lit the holiday tree in this part of Central
Park for four years. 'But this year, the dedication went to the children
of the victims of September 11. As was mentioned: "...this holiday
will be one of the most difficult in memory, the children of New York
will need this celebration's message of peace, hope and goodwill more
than ever..."
Well, ladies, gentleman, members of the Central Park
Conservancy and otherwise, I for one thank you for helping to heal the
child within me.
