New Year's Eve Special Airs Live At 11:00pm ET/PT With Live Performances And Appearances By Mary J. Blige, Kid Rock, Perez Hilton, Fabolous, Paramore, Good Charlotte, Wyclef, Boys Like Girls , Flo Rida and Cobra Starship.

The Revelers
Revelers start arriving late in the afternoon on New Year's Eve. By approximately 4:00 pm, the Bow Tie of Times Square (42nd to 47th Sts. between Broadway & 7th Ave.) is fully closed to traffic. Revelers are directed by the NYPD to gather in separate viewing sections. As one section fills up, the revelers are directed by police to the next viewing section. As the evening progresses, revelers continue to fill the Times Square neighborhood along Broadway and Seventh Avenue moving uptown from 43rd Street to as far as Central Park.

Philips Lighting Company Lights and Raises the Times Square New Year’s Eve Ball
The celebration begins with the Philips Lighting Company lighting and raising of the New Year’s Eve Ball atop One Times Square. Kaj den Daas, CEO of the Philips Lighting Company, will join Tim Tompkins and Jeffrey Straus, co-organizers of Times Square 2008 to flip the giant Switch which lights the New Year’s Eve Ball and begins its ascent accompanied by special pyrotechnic effects atop One Times Square.

Pontiac Garage Stage – Musical Performance by The Bravery
The Times Square New Year’s Celebration gets started with a musical performance by The Bravery from the Pontiac Garage Stage atop the setback roof at Two Times Square. A pyro effect draws the attention of the revelers to the Pontiac Garage Stage. The performance concludes with another pyro effect.

As we approach the New Year, Carson Daly will appear on the Countdown Stage to say “Happy New Year”, and lead the Times Square revelers in counting down to the end of each hour as a fifteen second video countdown is displayed on the giant Panasonic screens accompanied by special sound effects.

Times Square 2008 Balloons, Pontiac Hats, and Snapple Mittens
The Times Square Alliance sanitation crews clad in bright red uniforms begin to distribute tens of thousands of fun handouts to the Times Square revelers for cheering in the New Year. In addition to Times Square 2008 orange balloons tied with gold mylar ribbons; Pontiac provides festive red New Year’s Eve hats, and Snapple provides warm blue mittens.

The Sixty-Second Countdown
The Times Square 2008 Special Guest and New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg push the Waterford crystal button that signals the descent of the New Year’s Eve Ball, and lead the final sixty-second countdown to the New Year atop the Countdown Stage at Duffy Island, the center island on Broadway between 46th and 47th Streets.
The New 100th Anniversary Times Square New Year’s Eve Ball
The lighted Ball descends 77 feet in sixty seconds. The Ball is a geodesic sphere, six feet in diameter, weighing approximately 1,415 pounds. The Ball is covered with 672 Waterford crystal triangles and lit by 9,576 Philips Luxeon LED’s.

At the stroke of Midnight, the lights on the New Year’s Eve Ball are turned off as the numerals of the New Year “2008” burst to life shining high above Times Square.
Times Square Confetti Release and Pyrotechnic Effects
The world-famous New Year's Eve confetti is released from the rooftops of buildings throughout Times Square creating a celebratory blizzard of colorful confetti as revelers welcome the New Year accompanied by colorful pyrotechnic effects.

Things to Know For Your Visit to Times Square on New Year's
Eve
- This is NOT a ticketed event. All are welcomed for
the festivities.
- Getting There:
- The following Subway Lines will take you directly
to the Times Square Area: 1, 2, 3, 7, 9, A, B,
C, D, E, F, N, Q, R, W, V and S (with
most others dropping you off on 42nd Street at
a distant yet somewhat comfortable walking distance)
- Driving there? Forget about this since doing
so even on a regular day is discouraged ...unless
you can find paid parking at a lot somewhere.
- Many folks arrive hours ahead of time. Thus,
the earlier you arrive the better off you'll be
in as far as your being situated close to where
the main action is taking place.
- Comfort and Security:
- There will be no public restrooms on hand. So
DO KEEP THAT IN MIND.
- Alcohol of any kind will NOT be permitted. Bags
and Backpacks are also not allowed. So please do
leave them at home.

- New Years Eve has been held at Times Square since 1904
- The ball which is lowered from One Times Square weighs an
astounding 1,070 pounds ...originally it weighed only 700 pounds
- Within the ball are 432 light bulbs
- It's been a tradition to lower the ball since 1907
- Thousands of pounds of confetti are dropped at the strike of midnight.
