Chartered in 1988, The
Lower East Side Tenement Museum's mission is "to promote tolerance
and historical perspective through the presentation and interpretation
of the variety of immigrant and migrant experiences on Manhattan's Lower
East Side, a gateway to America."
Within this historic setting are a number of tours available:
- At the 97 Orchard Street Tenement are tours of restored apartments.
What might be amazing to some is how this structure dates back to 1864
when it was first opened by Lukas Glockner. The tour encompasses a timespan
from the 1870s to the early part of the 20th Century telling the stories
of past immigrant residents through those years.
- The Confino Family Apartment tour described by the Museum as a "living
history" apartment and a hands-on tour in which one can actually
personally investigate the home pieces and items within. "Gee,
I'd certainly like to play house in this apartment one day!"
- Streets Where We Lived Walking Tour which guides through the area.
You'll learn of the public spaces and historic buildings which "shaped,
and continue to shape, the community."
Note: The Tenement Museum if open to visitors by guided tour only
