Week Of Fun, Educational Programming Centers Around Extreme Environments

The Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum will host its annual Kids Week from Monday, February 15–Saturday, February 20. During Kids Week, visitors will have the opportunity to participate in dozens of fun-filled activities, hands-on workshops, live shows, special guests and demonstrations that the whole family will enjoy.

This year, Kids Week will explore the theme of extreme environments. From polar regions and deserts to the moon, Mars and beyond, the Museum will highlight the most exciting atmospheres in the universe through hands-on activities, exciting presentations, and special guests including astronauts, children’s book authors, scientists and engineers. Kids can learn how astronauts prepare for space by creating missions that test living conditions in challenging environments, discover the adaptations that would be necessary for life on far-off planets, and meet special guests from NASA who are helping to make space travel a reality. Families will see incredible animals adapted for unique environments, and encounter exciting technology inspired by animal adaptations, like cave-climbing robots.

Kids Week programming partners include FIRST, IceCube Neutrino Observatory, Dazzling Discoveries, Columbia Space Initiative, Future Engineers, CUNYSAT-1 at Medgar Evers College, Pratt School of Architecture, Rube Goldberg Speed Building Challenge, The Franklin Institute, Liberty Science Center, Town of Ramapo Challenger Learning Center, The Society of Women Engineers, and more!

Special guests include Jarod Miller, zoologist and naturalist who has been featured on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno and Late Night with Conan O’Brien, along with his amazing animals; Dr. Aaron Parness, robotics engineer and leader of NASA’s Jet Propulsion Lab’s Extreme Robotics Group; Dr. Dean Eppler, acclaimed geologist and lead space suit test subject and science lead for NASA’s Desert Research and Technology Studies; Allison Bolinger, NASA spacewalk flight controller and lead trainer at Johnson Space Center; Patrick O’Brien, author of You Are The First Kid on Mars; Brian Floca, author of Moonshot: The Flight of Apollo 11; and many more.

In addition, Intrepid Museum educators will lead live demonstrations, planetarium presentations, sketch theater performances, and Tour Guides will lead themed Tour Guide Talks throughout each day.
