| Coney Island is one of the best-known
amusement parks in the US and perhaps even in the entire world.
It was with the coming of the NYC subway that this area became
such a popular playground. It's almost like a small area stuck
in time. It's exactly as I remember it over 25 years ago.
Its 3.5 mile Boardwalk and sand beach is also famous as is
the wooden Cyclone Rollercoaster (built in 1927) and the Wonder
Wheel (built in 1920) both of which are NYC Landmarks. These
are just some of the many rides and forms of entertainment
for both kids and adults. On the corner of Surf And Stillwell
Avenues is Nathan's Famous. Here is the site of the very first
Nathan's which began as a nickel hot dog stand in 1916. As
a matter of fact, there's a July 4th annual hot dog eating
competition here. In 1999 our Mayor took part in welcoming
the competitors to City Hall for their weighing in.
You'll also find the Coney Island Circus Side Show, Coney
Island Museum and much more
Of the recent developments in the area, one is the new 6,500
seat KeySpan Park which is home to the Mets' minor league
affiliate team, the Brooklyn Cyclones. It was here on July
7, 2001 that the Hector "Macho" Camacho Jr. vs. Jesse James
Leija bout took place. It was the first world class boxing
match in over 50 years for this area.
Check out the MTA's
website for information on getting there. |
