The Chelsea Piers Sports & Entertainment Complex is 30 acres
of waterfront property located between 17th-23rd Sts just
off the Hudson River. It's host to a myriad of sports facilities.
Here you'll find virtually any and every form of sports entertainment
for people of all ages.
Here's a list of some of the sports available:
Baseball, basketball, bowling, boxing, golf, gymnastics, running,
skating of all sorts, swimming, volleyball, kayaking, rock
climbing, dancing. These are just a fraction of what's available!
A coupla' years ago I'd visited it a number
of times to watch skaters train...'For what and from where.....well,
didn't know, nor didn't care....'just enjoyed watching it
all!.....It was a fun to watch.
Spectators are allowed to enter the East Rink and sit on
the bleachers and watch skaters and hockey players. But you
really should call before coming for that purpose since they
occasionally have special events that are closed to the public.
Note that this complex is also host to Silver Screen Studios
from which have come a number of Films and Television Shows.
The Complex resides on Piers 59, 61, 61 & 62. These Piers
have their very own history. After 8 years of construction,
the Piers originally opened up in 1910 and served as the recipient
of many of the day's luxury ocean liners. A few of these were
the Lusitania, Mauretania, Normandie, and the Oceanic. Not
only were the rich to be welcomed at this site but also the
newly arrived immigrants from around the world. Immigrants
by the many thousands. During the World War years, these piers
also served as a departure point for many of our soldiers.
It was in later years after much neglect that the Piers
were saved from possible demolition. From 1992-1994, Chelsea
Piers Management, Inc. gained rights to build and maintain
a huge sports/entertainment complex. Ground was broken in
1994, and the first stages of this complex were opened in
1995.
