When this park first opened in 1899, it had only 843 animals.
Today, it has over 6,000. It is one of five facilities run
by the Wildlife Conservation Society. It's the largest metropolitan
zoo in the nation and its number one motive has always been
"The protection and care of animals, both in the wild
and at the zoo, has always been a priority." It's list
of animals goes on and on. It has an A to Z list of animals.
Some of which would include: Baboons, Bats, Birds, Butterflies,
Camels, Cats, Crocodiles, Ducks, Eagles, Flamingos, Giraffes,
Gorillas, Monkeys, Ostriches, Otters, Penguins, Snakes,
Storks, Tigers, Vultures and Zebras.
I got to go back recently for the first time in over 20
years...'What a Treat! As soon as you enter the park be
sure to ask for a map. Yes, it's free! You might need it
even though there are map signs throughout the park. This
Park is huge. 'Or at least it'll feel that way once you've
gotten half way through it.
My favorite part of the park was the Monkey House. Here
you'll see monkeys of sizes I never knew existed. 'Never
thought they came that small! My least favorite park feature
was the World of Darkness. There I was standing & wondering
what everyone was knowingly staring at. But, believe it
or not, thanks to my camera, some of the pics you'll see
on this page were taken in that very place.
If you remember anything from this page, you should remember
that the park is free on Wednesdays! There's a hefty price
to pay if you're going with the entire family.
Also note that there's: a Skyfari which travels overhead
from one end of the park to the other end; the Bengali Express
Monorail; Camel Rides; and a Zoo shuttle which is also a
narrated tour of the park. Nearby is the NY
Botanical Garden. |
