Just like the Bronx Zoo, I got to revisit this park again
for the first time in 20 years. Gosh! Just after my first
five minutes of walking through the grounds I'd gotten the
feeling that I was in a wonderland. 'Just as I remember it
from childhood. With plush green lawns and trees of every
sort, one is bombarded with green, green and then more green
of every shade imaginable.
All 250 acres of grounds, gardens, plant collections, flowers,
picnic grounds, and a huge conservatory make this one of the
oldest and largest botanical gardens in the world. There are
year 'round exhibitions at the Enid A. Haupt Conservatory.
It's basically one acre of plant life under glass. It's actually
quite impressive to look at.
On hand at the Garden is a tram tour for a small fee. It
might turn out to be your cup of tea should you not be in
the mood for hiking. 'and boy, did I hike! You'll need decent
stamina to make through parts of the 40 acre Forest. It's
really beautiful within. Armed with their free grounds map,
you should easily find your way to the waterfall. You'll know
you're getting closer as the rushing water gets louder. Be
careful along the way out from the Waterfall Overlook since
the terrain gets a bit tricky. There are number of other gardens
and exhibitions to see. Give 'em a call to find out.
Here is a funny little bit. Walking along the way, not too
far from the waterfall is this house. It's beautiful! A real
Kodak Moment! Anyhow, I'm waltzin' around looking for Snuff
Mill and I swore this had to be it. Heck, the wooden fence
door was open. So I entered and walked around and took pics.
It was only when I walked out that I saw a sign declaring
it as a private residence. 'Never found out what a private
residence is doing in the middle of the park (I eventually
will), and never found snuff mill either (or maybe I did and
was expecting something grander?). My point is this, it was
something to laugh about afterwards, but just be careful when
you come upon this house.....lol
Nearby is the Bronx Zoo.
