not sail the harbor. Access to Wavertree requires climbing a small set of
ladder-type stairs and an angled gangway. Wavertree Open Days are subject
to cancellation in the event of severe weather. More information on the hi
story of the Wavertree can be found at southstreetseaportmuseum.org/wavert
ree.\n\nAbout Wavertree\nThe 130-year-old Wavertree\, built of riveted wro
ught iron\, is an archetype of the sailing ships of the latter half of the
19th century that\, during the “age of sail\,” lined South Street by the
dozens\, creating a forest of masts from the Battery to the Brooklyn Bridg
e. Built in Southampton\, Great Britain\, she circled the globe four times
in her career\, carrying a wide variety of cargoes. The ship called on Ne
w York in 1896\, no doubt one of hundreds like her berthed in the city. In
1910\, after thirty-five years of sailing\, she was caught in a Cape Horn
storm that tore down her masts and ended her career as a cargo ship. She
was salvaged and used as a floating warehouse and then a sand barge in Sou
th America\, where the waterfront workers referred to her as “el gran Vale
ro\,” the great sailing ship. She was saved by the Seaport Museum in 1968
and towed to New York to become the iconic centerpiece of the “Street of S
hips” at South Street two years later. From 2015-2016\, Wavertree underwen
t a $13 million restoration generously funded by New York City’s Departmen
t of Cultural Affairs with support from the Mayor’s Office\, the City Coun
cil\, and Manhattan Borough President and managed by the Department of Des
ign and Construction.\n\nAbout the South Street Seaport Museum\nThe South
Street Seaport Museum\, located in the heart of the South Street Seaport H
istoric District in New York City\, preserves and interprets the history o
f New York as a great port city. Founded in 1967\, the Museum houses an ex
tensive collection of works of art and artifacts\, a maritime reference li
brary\, exhibition galleries and education spaces\, working nineteenth cen
tury print shops\, and an active fleet of historic vessels that all work t

Past & Present — A weekend of Architecture\, Culture & Community – free ev
ents and walking tours
\nA small building with a large cultural footprint\, 1014 Fift
h Avenue stands on the cusp of change. 1014: Past and Future pres
ents vignettes from the townhouse’s previous uses as an ambassador’s home
and as Goethe House New York\, as well as visionary and contextually sensi
tive renovation proposals by David Chipperfield Architects and other prestigious designers.\n\nLong a haven for artists and intelle
ctuals\, and a center of transatlantic cultural and intellectual exchange\
, the Beaux-Arts townhouse—one of the last of its kind along Museum Mile—w
ill once again be a space for dialogue and exchange with a contemporary cr
oss-disciplinary international residency program for fellows to live and p
ractice together as well as to present their work to New Yorkers.\n
A Building and its Neighborhood
\nRanging from the ruins
of Seneca village to Carl Schurz Park\, the Upper East Side neighborhood\
, which is home to 1014\, is one of the world’s premier places for art wit
h a long history of migration from all over the world. The exhibition pres
ents this to the public from October 14th until 17th
– each day from 11 AM to 5 PM.\n
Events throughout the Weekend
\nAn extensive program of lectures\, talks\, and art present
ations will be presented on October 16th and 17th and will be open to the
public and free of charge. Experts will offer presentations and moderated
talks on the re-use of historic townhouses\, the stories behind UES-mansio
ns\, and more.\n
Discovering the Neighborhood in Walking Tours<
/strong>
\nAs part of the program\, 1014 offers free walking tours wit
h architects and historians through the Upper East Side. The tours start i
nside the exhibition 1014: Past and Future and will the
n venture into the neighborhood.\n
