Wave Hill

Glyndor House at Wave Hill

Wave Hill - Located in Riverdale, Bronx at the very edge of the Hudson River is this oasis of green. This historical site has many gardens and fantastic views of the New Jersey Palisades. Opened year 'round, it's a welcoming splendor of horticultural wonders. Their collections contain thousands of species of plants. "Wave Hill's horticultural emphasis is on plantsmanship and the aesthetics of gardening"

I got to visit there in late 2001 and although the scenery wasn't as spectacular as my Spring and Summer time visits, you can't help but stand on any of their lawns or gardens and be awed by the sights to behold.

But that's not all. There are programs for adults, kids, teens and the whole family. Also available are concerts and lectures. Of course there's also Glyndor House where exhibitions of contemporary art are displayed and the Historical Wave Hill House wherein is the Kerlin Learning Center and a Cafe with a beautiful picnic area to enjoy your coffee or snack.

Should you decide to visit this great historical site then be sure to bring your camera because you won't forgive yourself if you didn't. Enjoy!

History

Built in 1843 as a country home by William Lewis Morris, the House became quite a historical NYC feature today because of the many notable names which have stayed there. Thomas Henry Huxley and Charles Darwin were guests of William Henry Appleton whom owned the house from 1866-1903. Even Theodore Roosevelt spent a small portion of his childhood there. Other great names to have resided at Wave Hill are: George W. Perkins, a partner of the great John Pierpont Morgan, Arturo Toscanini and Mark Twain.
