NEW PARK. New York City’s Olympic Village Tomorrow’s
New York will be shaped by a new attitude towards its natural and
constructed landscapes. Our design for a sustainable Olympic Village
will be the first large-scale project in this fundamental shift
and is based on six simple ideas.
The first idea will result in the production of a new park: the
Olympic Green. The 8-acre park will bridge over a rebuilt rail yard
and will unite the Olympic Village with the surrounding neighborhoods.
The second idea is the creation of an Olympic Ring which extends
Jackson Avenue around the Village in order to provide continuous
public access to an ecologically-balanced waterfront park.
The third idea is the placement of five slender river towers where
athletes and residents will live with extraordinary panoramic views.
The fourth idea is the creation of new blocks expanding the Hunters
Point street pattern over the new park and into the Olympic Village,
extending the visual corridors from neighborhood to waterfront.
Within each block there is a sheltered courtyard for special Olympic
events and year-round use by the block’s residents.
The fifth idea is the formation of a new transit hub below the
new park where the Long Island Railroad meets the river taxi terminal.
The sixth idea is for buildings and landscapes to be linked together
as a regenerative system exceeding all existing standards for sustainability
and energy utilization, and setting a standard for housing well
into the next century. New York City’s Olympic Village will
show the way to a new city whose waterfronts are integral to the
everyday life of its citizens.
